Bottom line on bottom lines: treat yourself well and share generously with others.

Be smart with your money and smarter with your health. Elect public officials who see hunger as unacceptable. Support the individuals and businesses that are helping create a humane and sustainable world. And make choices every day that will bring that world into being.

But Everybody Says Something Different

You may at this point be thinking, “I want good karma. I want to save animals and feel happy and look good when I’m seventy, but I’m confused about food and nutrition: everybody says something different.” I hear you. And I hear them—the countless conflicting voices with views on food and nutrition that don’t just differ on technicalities, but can seem to be all over the map. Sometimes I think the wisest response to all the he said/she said is to go deep inside, get really still, and allow for your own truth to surface. What resonates with you? What makes sense? Envision yourself a year from now, and ten years from now, if you continue eating and living precisely as you have been. No changes. Just keep on keepin’ on, and a year from now, and ten years from now, what does your body look like? What does your life look like? How has the way you’ve lived for this projected decade shaped the lives of others and the direction of our culture?

Next, do the same visualization, inserting some way of eating you’ve considered—paleo or Mediterranean or farm-to-table omnivore or something else. In one year, and in ten, what does your body look like? And your life? And what about the lives of those you’ve influenced and impacted, the amount of suffering you’ve curtailed, the contribution you’ve made to what a spiritual teacher of mine used to call “the upward progression of the universe”?

Now envision that you’ve made the Good Karma choice. You’re eating exclusively from the plant kingdom with lots of fresh, raw foods the colors of spring bouquets and Christmas windows. You allow yourself some leeway in your food choices for when life intervenes, but for the most part you’re eating whole, unprocessed vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains the way nature presents them, the best food you can afford prepared in the best ways you know how—usually simple and basic, sometimes epicurean and out of this world. After a year, what does your body look like? And after ten years? After a year and after ten, what does your life look like? And after a year and after a decade, how has the way you’ve lived affected other people, other animals, and the evolutionary trajectory of life on earth?
